the 2019 met gala

THE TIME HAS COME. THE DAY WE HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR. THE ONLY ELECTRIFYING MONDAY OF THE YEAR. THE FUCKING MET GALA!!!!!!! I want to jump into this as bad as the next chick, but I need to lay out some preliminary information. First of all, the theme this year is CAMP, based on Susan Sontag's essay "Notes on Camp". Camp is difficult to define, but this and this article from W Magazine is what I used as my jumping off point for what the theme really is. The short version that I've understood is that it's over the top to the point of being almost satirical, super extravagant, self-aware, completely exaggerated. So keep the theme in mind while I'm sharing my thoughts.

Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell

  • One of the hosts of the night

  • Camp fashion is all about transformation, meaning she's completely in theme

  • The idea of an alter-ego is also keeping in camp theme

  • Her outfit went from a pink gown with a 25 foot train, then she shed the gown into a black dress with a molded hip, then she shed that one to reveal a simple pink dress with a slit down the back, and finally, she changed into a two piece sparkly black number complete with fishnets and the literal highest heels I've ever seen

  • This event is all about moments and watching her literally morph from look to look couldn't be more of a moment in fashion

  • (Images courtesy of Karsten Moran for The New York Times; Evan Agostini/Invision/AP)

Serena Williams in Versace

  • One of the hosts of the night

  • That yellow on her skin tone!! Unreal

  • The Off-White/Nike sneaker collaboration making an appearance on this carpet could only be done by her

  • Not necessarily in theme but definitely cool

  • (Images courtesy of Karsten Moran and Nina Westervelt for The New York Times)

Billy Porter in The Blonds

  • Absolutely unreal--the only Greek Goddess I needed to see

  • Serving ball culture/queer culture

  • The presence of men literally carrying him into the carpet is SO camp because of the self-awareness of being so completely over the top

  • Totally on theme

  • (Images courtesy of Karsten Moran and Nina Westervelt for The New York Times)

Celine Dion in Oscar De La Renta

  • The headpiece is absolutely beautiful, I think it's campy but I think that could just be because I'm in love with her

  • Her LEGS

  • (Images courtesy of Karsten Moran and Nina Westervelt for the New York Times)

Karlie Kloss in Gucci

  • Couldn't be less campy...I genuinely don't know why she wore it

  • Not in theme--why come if you're gonna wear a homecoming dress

  • (Images courtesy of Jamie McCarthy and Dimitrios Kambouris, respectively, for Getty)

Laverne Cox by Christian Siriano

  • QUEER CULTURE FOR DAYS

  • That headpiece>>>>>

  • This makeup is a moment in and of itself

  • She is inherently in theme regardless of her attire, which also happens to be in theme

  • (Images courtesy of Charles Sykes/Invasion/AP)

Rachel Brosnahan by Erdem

  • Honestly not campy at all, but she looks beautiful

  • I couldn't find a picture of her hair, but that was my favorite part

  • (Image courtesy of Karsten Moran for The New York Times)

Aquaria in John Galliano for Margiela

  • CAMPY AS HELL

  • Drag is always camp

  • The headpiece. The shoes. The talons. The makeup.

  • My favorite look of the night hands down

  • (Images courtesy of Karsten Moran for The New York times and Neilson Barnard for Getty)

Ryan Murphy in Christian Siriano

  • What could be campier than Liberace?

  • Absolutely stunning. Killed it

  • (Images courtesy of Jamie McCarthy for Getty and @casacalle_ Instagram account)

Yara Shahidi in Prada

  • I would call this junior camp

  • Definitely on theme

  • This beauty moment is unreal

  • Absolutely loathe these shoes but everything else is on point

  • (Images courtesy of Jamie McCarthy for Getty)

Kris Jenner in Tommy Hilfiger

  • I don't ever want to just blatantly shit on a designer, because they're all talented in their own way, but if I had to think of a designer who is the literal antithesis of camp it would probably be Mr. Hilfiger...so why is he dressing someone for this event...?

  • The blonde. I just...

  • (Image Courtesy of Jamie McCarthy for Getty)

Tiffany Haddish in Michael Kors

  • Her attitude alone is on theme

  • The fried chicken in her purse is campier than anything on the carpet

  • (Image courtesy of Neilson Barnard for Getty)

Saoirse Ronan in Gucci

  • This should be cheesy as hell, but it's honestly perfect

  • The SHOULDERS

  • Somehow it feels like she's holding back on this, but I appreciate the effort and I think it's pretty on theme

  • Serving GoT moment

  • (Images courtesy of Karsten Moran for The New York Times and Shutterstock)

The Olsen Twins in Vintage Chanel

  • Not even close to being in theme but they damn near invented this carpet, so who really cares

  • (Images courtesy of John Shearer for THR/Getty and Karsten Moran for The New York Times)

Emily Blunt in Michael Kors

  • It looks absolutely stunning. Like I literally can't stop looking at it

  • This look is proof that it's possible to be over the top without being campy which might be a good thing in any other context but here it's slightly unfortunate

  • (Image courtesy of Theo Wargo for WireImage)

Miley Cyrus in Saint Laurent

  • There's really nothing campy about it, but I'm truly obsessed with this look

  • The simply hair and makeup is stunning, but again, not appropriate for this theme

  • Just because it's structured doesn't mean it's campy...

  • (Image courtesy of Dia Dipasupil for FilmMagic)

Alessia Cara in Giambattista Valli

  • I'm sorry but what the actual fuck

  • I had to include a separate picture for the shoes just so you could really soak in their heinous nature

  • This is the perfect example of how Serena William's sporty vibe could go terribly, terribly wrong

  • I'm just wondering what about this says camp

  • It looks like a junior prom tragedy

  • (Images courtesy of Getty)

Darren Criss

  • Literally couldn't be better

  • This eyeshadow is SENDING ME

  • By far the most valiant effort by a straight man to be in theme (Harry Styles is tied)

  • (Image courtesy of Jamie McCarthy for Getty)

Hailey Bieber in Alexander Wang

  • The hair is campy as HELL. Obsessed

  • The THONG of it all

  • The look in its entirety isn't on theme but I appreciate the attention to detail which is what makes it campy

  • She looks good as hell and that's indisputable

  • (Images courtesy of Angela Weiss for AFP/Getty, Neilson Barnard for Getty, and Theo Wargo for WireImage)

Elle Fanning in Miu Miu

  • Absolutely incredible--one of my favorite looks of the night

  • The irony and parody of it is what makes it completely on theme

  • The accessorizing alone could win awards

  • (Images courtesy of Karsten Moran for The New York Times, Nina Westervelt for The New York Times, and Getty)

Lili Reinhart in Ferragamo

  • Marie Antoinette vibes

  • Not a fan of the shorts, but that's just me

  • Is this camp? Probably not, but she's having fun

  • (Images courtesy of Dimitrios Kambouris for Getty Images)

James Charles in Alexander Wang

  • The nipples couldn't be less necessary

  • The best tweet I saw about this is "this isn't Coachella weekend 3"

  • How is he about to be a literal MAKEUP ARTIST and pull this basic ass smokey eye at a CAMP- themed event?? Like how does he deadass have the most boring look on this damn carpet

  • Anna Wintour what the FUCK were you thinking inviting this man

  • (Image courtesy of Dia Dipasupil for Getty)

Kasey Musgraves in Moschino

  • NOTHING IS MORE CAMPY THAN BARBIE. THIS IS BRILLIANT

  • She looks absolutely perfect

  • The fact that they made a REAL Barbie based on this look is so fucking iconic I simply can't

  • We also can't overlook the fact that she pulled up in a deadass Barbie Dream Car

  • (Images courtesy of Getty and @expressi0nless Twitter account)

Cami Mendes in Prabal Gurung

  • This dress is fugly and it's not in theme. Next.

  • (Image courtesy of Neilson Barnard for Getty)

Gigi Hadid in Michael Kors

  • Liberache/Elton John vibes

  • I'm shocked that she's in theme this year. Congrats, sister

  • Spectacle=campy, and this is definitely a spectacle

  • Obsessed with the eyelashes

  • (Images courtesy of Karsten Moran for The New York Times and Nina Westervelt for The New York Times)

Bette Midler in Pierpaolo Piccioli

  • Hocus Pocus realness. This is all I could have asked for

  • Campy as hell due to the self-awareness of it all

  • (Image courtesy Dia Dipasupil for FilmMagic)

Joan Collins in Valentino

  • SHE DRESSED AS HER CHARACTER FROM DYNASTY. CAN YOU SAY CAMPY?!??!?!?!?

  • I just can't get over it. She literally dressed as herself. The self-awareness is camp at the highest of levels

  • This bitch is 85 and showed up looking more in theme than half you bitches--there are no excuses

  • (Images courtesy of Everett Digital for Getty and WireImage)

Naomi Campbell in Valentino

  • This woman can do absolutely no wrong and this color against her skin is the gift that keeps on giving

  • She is camp ALWAYS (refer to the Dolce & Gabbana gown she wore to complete her community service hours)

  • I'm just obsessed with this look--the tights are everything

  • The fact that she hired a man to fan her all the way up the carpet just so you could see her feathers flutter...I mean...

  • (Images courtesy of Getty)

Tracee Ellis Ross in Moschino

  • I mean this dress couldn't be more flattering, but she could be wearing a paper bag with this LOOK of the picture frame

  • CAMP

  • (Images courtesy of Neilson Barnard and Dimitrios Kambouris for Getty)

Zoë Kravitz in Saint Laurent

  • It's not camp but it's so good

  • Why does this hair look good on her

  • Truly an anomaly

  • (Image courtesy of Karsten Moran for The New York Times)

Bella Hadid in Moschino

  • Honestly if it were anyone else I would probably hate it, but she's her so I'll take it

  • She could slit my throat with that hip bone

  • It's not self-aware which is why it's not camp

  • Wondering how this hair is working--I'm thinking of how this would look on me and literally chuckling out loud

  • I'm assuming Abel didn't get the invite because Anna is punishing him for showing up with the train-wreck that is Selena Gomez the past couple years

  • (Images courtesy of Theo Wargo for Getty)

Kim Kardashian West in Mugler

  • After much deliberation, and trust me, I've been deliberating, I don't think the look itself is camp, but her persona and literal body are definitely camp

  • Are you kidding me with that waist

  • She honestly has never looked better and if this were any other carpet or event I would be absolutely obsessed with it--I mean I am obsessed with it currently but it's just not on theme

  • Not 100% sure what Kanye is doing but I'm just gonna leave that alone

  • (Images courtesy of David Fisher/Rex/Shutterstock, Theo Wargo for WireImage, and Nina Westervelt for The New York Times)

Janelle Monae in Christian Siriano

  • FUCKING MAJOR

  • The blinking titty. That's all you need to know

  • CAMP AF

  • THIS is how you abide by a theme. Unreal

  • (Images courtesy of Nina Westervelt for The New York Times and Dia Dipasupil for FilmMagic)

Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton

  • Not in theme, even remotely

  • Sparkles does not equal camp!!!!

  • She looks pretty! But that's not relevant

  • (Images courtesy of Theo Wargo and Dia Dipasupil for Getty)

Ciara in Peter Dundas

  • BEST HAIR OF THE NIGHT NO QUESTION

  • This color on her skin!!! Thank you!!!

  • Not obsessed with the outfit but the hair is taking me there so it's fine

  • (Images courtesy of Angela Weiss and Dimitrios Kambouris for Getty)

Tom Brady and Giselle Bündchen in Tom Ford & Dior

  • Looking like they peaked in high school when they were voted prom king and queen and won't stop referencing it

  • For god's sake. Stop making out on red carpets

  • She's worn the same dress every year she's been to this event and it is literally never in theme. Why do they keep getting invited

  • (Image courtesy of Dia Dipasupil for FilmMagic)

Kendall and Kylie Jenner in Versace

  • I am shocked...they killed this

  • Jury is still out on whether it's really campy but they look great regardless

  • The memes about these looks are fucking hilarious

  • (Images courtesy of Nina Westervelt for The New York Times, David Fisher/Rex/Shutterstock, Nielson Barnard for Getty)

Cara Delevingne in Dior

  • TRUE camp

  • Not trying to be anything except camp

  • Completely opposite of nature and therefore completely on theme

  • THE CANE. THE HEADPIECE

  • (Images courtesy of Nina Westervelt for The New York Times, Dimitrios Kambouris and Gilbert Carrasquillo for Getty)

Cardi B in Thom Browne

  • So on theme it's insane

  • The accentuated hips

  • Cardi is inherently campy

  • Fuck if you're saying she looks like a blood-soaked tampon. You wish your tampon looked this good

  • (Images courtesy of Nina Westervelt and Karsten Moran for The New York Times)

Tessa Thompson in Chanel

  • VERY camp

  • (Image courtesy of Lexie Moreland/WWD/Rex/Shutterstock)

  • (Image courtesy of David Fisher/Rex/Shutterstock)

Lupita Nyong’o in Versace

  • SOOOOOOO GOOD

  • The fucking hair. The afro picks.

  • This beauty moment inspired by drag icon Divine>>

  • These rainbow shoulders!!!!!!
